Twelve tiny-world views from SeaOrb underwater surveys

What we do

SeaOrb is developing an affordable way to measure species and habitats in subtidal environments. We combine consumer 360-degree cameras with computer vision to turn underwater video into quantitative ecological observations.

Because 360-degree cameras record every direction, divers do not need to aim at a single species or feature. One survey can capture vegetation, animals, and substrate together, preserving footage that can be revisited as new research questions emerge.

Why we are building it

Underwater monitoring is expensive, and reviewing video requires substantial time and expertise. These constraints limit how often surveys can be conducted and how much information can be recovered from them.

Our goal is to reduce both collection and analysis costs so researchers and conservation groups can survey more places, more often.

Who we work with

SeaOrb works with divers, researchers, agencies, and conservation organizations. Their biological and field knowledge helps us build useful annotation methods, training data, and models for real monitoring needs.

We intend to provide SeaOrb's models and survey outputs free for research, conservation, Tribal, and citizen-science use.
